How it was born

A June 2026 bill from Southern California Edison, on the TOU-D-PRIME plan, and a house that renders on two 4090s and charges a car. The tariff has three prices in summer and three in winter, and they switch at hours nobody remembers. The question every evening was simple and the answer was never at hand: is it cheaper to start this render now, or at nine.

So the tariff became a day you can scrub. The app was built with Claude and published on July 17, 2026. The summer rates come straight off that bill, delivery and generation added, before taxes. The winter rates are estimates, and the app says so and lets you edit them.

What it does

A 24 hour rail with the tariff periods drawn on it. Drag the playhead, or press Now in LA, and the readout shows the price per kilowatt-hour at that moment, in the period it belongs to. Toggle weekday against weekend and holiday, summer against winter, and the rail redraws.

Summer, June 1 to September 30: on-peak 4 pm to 9 pm on weekdays, mid-peak the same hours on weekends and holidays, off-peak the rest of the time.
Winter, October to May: on-peak 4 pm to 9 pm every day, super off-peak 8 am to 4 pm, off-peak the rest.
Presets for the things that actually run in the house: an EV charge at 18 kWh, a five hour render on two 4090s at 4.5 kWh, a dryer at 3, a washer at 1.5. Type any other load in kilowatt-hours.

Land on the peak and the page turns red, mid-peak turns it amber. That is not decoration: the colour is the whole point, because the price is what you feel before you read it.

What it does not do

It does not know your bill. The base charge of $0.769 a day and the local taxes are real and they are not in the readout, because they do not change with the hour and the app is about the hour. The winter figures are estimates until a winter bill replaces them. Everything else is a multiplication.

The rate table did not stay in this page. It was later wired into a render cost tracker, so a take rendered at night and a take rendered at five in the afternoon carry different prices in the log. A small app that answers one question tends to get asked others.
